UAW Strike Widens: GM’s Spring Hill Factory Hit, 20,000 Workers Now on Strike

globalautonews Views

While Ford and Stellantis have reached a tentative agreement with UAW and union members are returning to the factories, GM is, on the contrary, expanding the strike to its Spring Hill factory in Tennessee. The Spring Hill factory is GM’s largest facility, producing the Cadillac XT5, XT6, Lyric, and GMC Acadia. Engines for Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac trucks are also produced at this factory.

With an additional 4,000 Spring Hill factory workers participating in the strike, 20,000 workers are now on strike. This has impacted production at factories in Missouri, Lansing Delta Township in Michigan, and Arlington, Texas. Eighteen parts distribution centers across the U.S. were also affected by the strike.

GM has halted production of the Chevrolet Malibu and Cadillac XT4 at its Fairfax factory in Kansas and has also laid off workers at various parts production factories.

In its Q3 2023 earnings announcement, GM estimated strike losses at about $200 million per share, totaling over $800 million, before UAW announced a strike at the Arlington facility, which is considered the most profitable car assembly factory in the world.
