Peaches grown in Fukushima, Japan, known for its nuclear disaster, will be sold in one of the UK’s luxury department stores for the first time.
According to AFP, Harrods will sell Fukushima peaches until early next month. Often referred to as the official department store for the British royal family, Harrods is a well-known luxury department store.
This sale aims to dispel ongoing safety concerns about Fukushima agricultural products that have persisted since the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.
The Fukushima region was Japan’s second-largest peach-producing area, but sales of peaches and other fruits plummeted following the radiation leak in 2011.
A Tokyo Electric Power Company spokesperson told AFP, “The main goal is to eliminate fears about Fukushima agricultural products overseas.”
A set of three peaches is being sold for £80 (approximately $105), which is still expensive even for UK residents.
In addition to peaches, Harrods plans to sell Shine Muscat grapes from Fukushima starting in October.
The UK had restricted imports of Japanese food products after the Fukushima nuclear accident but lifted those measures in 2022.
