North Korea Slams UN Chief, Calls His Appeal for Peace ‘Interference’

inews24 Views

North Korea has criticized the UN Secretary-General António Guterres for his call to de-escalate tensions on the Korean Peninsula, stating that the situation is “not the place for the UN Secretary-General to interfere.”

This rebuke came as North Korea announced plans to sever road and rail connections with South Korea and build defensive structures starting on October 9. The next day, North Korean military posts in Kaepung County, Hwanghae Province, were visible from the Odusan Observatory in Paju, Gyeonggi Province. / Newsis

On Sunday, North Korean Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Kim Sun Kyung defended these actions through the Korean Central News Agency, asserting that decisions on whether to dismantle or construct such infrastructure are “entirely our sovereign right.”

This followed Guterres’s comments last week, in which he urged restraint and called for restoring communication channels between North Korea and other parties. Guterres was responding to questions from Voice of America about North Korea’s decision to demolish rail links with South Korea.

Kim strongly rejected Guterres’ statements, calling them interference in North Korea’s internal affairs. He also condemned the South Korean military for alleged drone provocations, accusing them of violating North Korean sovereignty.

Kim added that it was a “double standard” to criticize North Korea’s defensive measures while ignoring South Korea’s actions. He further accused Guterres of enabling the United States and South Korea’s attempts to provocations, stating, “The UN Secretary-General, who incites the war frenzy of warmongers, will not escape responsibility.”
