Amid reports of North Korean troops being deployed to support Russia in its conflict with Ukraine, Ukrainian officials have released a video urging these soldiers to surrender.
According to the Kyiv Post, Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence Agency (HUR) issued an appeal through its ‘surrender hotline’ for Russian soldiers on Wednesday, stating, “Regardless of nationality, religion, or ideology, Ukrainian prisoner-of-war camps are ready to accept all soldiers. We appeal to the North Korean soldiers being deployed for Putin’s regime: Don’t die in vain on foreign soil.”
The HUR further emphasized, “Do not share the fate of the hundreds of thousands of Russian soldiers who couldn’t return home. Surrender! Ukraine will provide shelter, food, and warmth.”
The Ukrainian authorities also released a separate video in Korean, highlighting that “prisoners of war are housed in warm, well-lit rooms with separate sleeping areas” and “three meals a day are provided, including meat, fresh vegetables, and bread.” The video showed clean detention facilities and meals featuring meat.
Earlier on Tuesday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in a speech that they had received information about North Korea preparing two brigades of 6,000 troops each, totaling 12,000 soldiers, to fight alongside Russia.
While South Korean intelligence agencies have confirmed the involvement of North Korean troops, both Russia and North Korea continue to deny any deployment.
