Several nations have condemned Israel’s plans to occupy and expand settlements in Syria’s Golan Heights following the removal of former President Bashar al-Assad.

On Monday, Al Jazeera reported that several Middle Eastern countries, along with Israel’s ally Germany, criticized Israel’s decision to expand settlements in the Golan Heights, a region under Israeli occupation since 1967. This criticism comes amid heightened diplomatic activity as a new interim government assumes power in Syria after al-Assad’s ousting.

Reports indicate that Israel approved the expansion of settlements just days after occupying more Syrian territory in the immediate aftermath of al-Assad’s ousting.

Syria is currently facing intense bombardment from Israel, with hundreds of attacks targeting military facilities and research centers across the country.

On Monday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded to the criticism, saying, “Strengthening the Golan Heights strengthens the State of Israel, and it is especially important at this time. We will continue to hold on to it, make it flourish, and settle it.”
