Daniel Kim Views

The number of American adults identifying as LGBTQ+ has significantly increased from 3.6% in 2013 to 7.6% in 2023

Three out of ten of Generation Z in the United States consider themselves to be sexual minorities, according to a survey.

The findings were reported in the April 9th issue of the Numbers weekly report by the Pastoral Data Institute, titled Perception of Sexual Minorities by Generation in the United States. Below are the details of the survey results.

Perception of Sexual Minorities by Generation in the United States

1. One in three of Generation Z in the U.S. identifies themselves as LGBTQ+

According to a report on the Perception of Sexual Minorities released earlier this year by the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI) in the United States, among adults over 18, the proportion identifying as LGBTQ (an acronym for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer) varies by generation, with Gen Z (ages 18-25) at 28%, significantly higher than the Millennial generation at 16%, and Generation X at 7%. The younger the generation, the more likely they are to identify as a sexual minority.

2. The number of American adults identifying as LGBTQ+ has significantly increased from 3.6% in 2013 to 7.6% in 2023

How has the perception of one’s sexual identity changed? According to a Gallup survey on the perception of sexual minorities, as of 2023, 7.6% of U.S. adults recognize themselves as LGBTQ+, a significant increase from the survey conducted ten years ago, which stood at 3.6%.
