From Rival to Ally: Nikki Haley’s Surprising Pivot to Support Trump

Former UN Ambassador Nikki Haley, who competed against former President Donald Trump in the last Republican primary, has expressed her support for Trump.

According to Yonhap News, Haley stated in a lecture at the Hudson Institute on the 22nd (local time), “As a voter, I prioritize a presidential candidate who supports our allies, holds our enemies accountable, and safeguards our borders.” She continued, “A president who supports capitalism and freedom, and understands that we need less debt, not more.”

She admitted, “Former President Trump was not perfect in these policies, and I’ve made that clear several times.” However, she declared, “But Biden is a disaster. That’s why I will vote for Trump.”

Despite all this, she asserted, “I still want to stick to what I said in my resignation speech. Trump needs to reach out to those who voted for me and continue to support me. He shouldn’t assume that they will support him.”

This is the first time Haley, who has been a central figure in the anti-Trump faction within the Republican Party, has publicly supported Trump.

She officially announced her withdrawal from the Republican primary race on March 6, right after “Super Tuesday,” when the most states hold primaries simultaneously. However, she is still garnering around 20% of the votes in some ongoing state Republican primaries, demonstrating her sustained support.

During her resignation speech, Haley did not express support for Trump, merely stating, “Whether Trump can garner votes within and outside our party is up to him.”

While some around Trump suggest considering strategies such as nominating Haley as a vice presidential candidate to expand his base to the center, Trump himself has dismissed these ideas.

Haley, too, has avoided mentioning Trump at events and in conversations with supporters.

She has not revealed her position on any other political activities besides joining the Hudson Institute, a conservative think tank.
