Biden Urges Public to Judge Trump as Supreme Court Grants Immunity

President Joe Biden has strongly criticized the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to grant immunity to former President Donald Trump’s attempts to overturn the election results. Biden urged Americans to pass judgment on Trump and called for support for his presidency.

On the 1st, CNN and NPR reported that Biden delivered a five-minute speech criticizing the Supreme Court’s decision to apply immunity as a “dangerous precedent” that “threatens the rule of law.”

He expressed concern that the Supreme Court’s decision suggests there are virtually no limits to presidential powers. He elaborated that the authority of the White House, including its influence over the U.S. Supreme Court, would no longer be restrained by law. The only limitation would be the constraints the president imposes on himself.

Biden further argued that due to the Supreme Court’s ruling, Trump will not face judgment for his attempts to undermine the transfer of power. He urged Americans to pass judgment on Trump. “Now the American people will have to do what the court should have been willing to do and would not: Americans will have to render a judgment about Donald Trump’s behavior,” Biden said. He requested their support for him in the upcoming election instead of Trump.

Earlier that day, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled 6-3 that a sitting president should be exempted from criminal prosecution for official acts related to Trump’s attempt to overturn the election results. The court deemed that immunity applies to discussions with Justice Department officials and post-election proceedings related to the four charges of trying to overturn the election for which Trump was indicted.

As a result, the likelihood of a trial related to Trump’s charges of trying to overturn the election results taking place before the November election has essentially diminished. The Supreme Court is in recess from late June/early July until the first Monday in October. Even if a lower court makes a decision, there is a high possibility that Trump will appeal. There are also predictions that if Trump successfully regains power, he will request the Attorney General to prosecute.

After the verdict, Trump welcomed the decision on social media, saying, “big win for our Constitution and democracy,” and he took pride in being an American.

However, the Supreme Court requested lower courts determine if immunity applies to Trump’s pressure on then-Vice President Mike Pence to refuse to certify the election results and his actions related to the Capitol riot.

Biden has struggled in a recent TV debate against Trump and has faced doubts about his mental and cognitive abilities, with some even calling for his resignation. Despite this, President Biden has shown his determination to complete the election based on the support of his base.
