U.S. Sanctions on Chinese Network Supporting North Korea’s Missile Program

Daniel Kim Views

The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) sanctioned five Chinese companies and six Chinese individuals for supporting North Korea’s ballistic missile and space program.

The companies include Jinghua Qidi Electronic Technology, Beijing Sanshunda Electronic Science and Technology, Qidong Hengcheng Electronic Factory, Mingwei Electric in Shenzhen, and Yida Tong Tianjin Metal Materials. OFAC reports that these companies procured goods related to North Korea’s missile and space programs. Furthermore, six Chinese individuals, including Tian Tianxin, were on the list.

Once sanctioned, they are prohibited from making any transactions within the U.S.; their assets will be frozen and banned from traveling to the U.S.

The Treasury Department explained, “Today’s action reaffirms that the relevant UNSCRs remain in full force and reiterates the United States’ commitment to countering sanctions evasion and strengthening enforcement efforts.”

Brian E. Nelson, the Treasury’s Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, noted, “The DPRK’s continued development and proliferation of ballistic missile technologies—in violation of UN sanctions—is both irresponsible and destabilizing for both the region and the international community.”
