North Korea Breaks Silence on South Korean Election: A Crushing Defeat for Yoon Suk Yeol
Daniel Kim Views
For the first time, North Korea commented on the results of the South Korean general election on April 10th, claiming on the 16th that it was a “stern judgment of public sentiment” against Yoon Suk Yeol’s party. However, they did not mention specific election results, such as the number of seats won by each party.
The Rodong Sinmun, a North Korean Workers’ Party newspaper, reported in an article about the candlelight vigil in South Korea, stating, “In the wake of the crushing defeat of the People’s Power in the South Korean parliamentary elections, masses from all walks of life have risen in a popular struggle for the impeachment of Yoon Suk Yeol.”
In contrast, North Korea promptly reported the results of the South’s elections during the 20th general election of 2016, using state-run media outlets such as the Rodong Sinmun and the Korean Central News Agency.
No election results were reported by state-run media during the 21st general election four years ago. However, the radio broadcast to South Korea, Pyongyang Broadcasting, reported ten days after the election that “anger towards Hwang Kyo Ahn is boiling within the conservative party following the United Future Party’s crushing defeat in the parliamentary elections.”
