The North Korean Workers’ Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun reported on the 16th that North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and key party officials had visited the Pungo district in Sinpo City the previous day. They toured the construction site of the aquaculture business, identified the business plans, and convened a meeting with local related sector officials.
According to the newspaper, Kim showed a strong will to make this site a model for aquaculture, stating, “If calm and kelp cultivation from the Phungo Offshore Fish Farm prospers, the barren and economically weak Sinpo City could become the wealthiest city among the cities and counties of the Republic in 3 to 4 years.”
He particularly pointed out that “the aquaculture business plan reported by the design sector was not written at a level suitable for a model creation of the new century aquaculture industry.”
“We need to seriously explore and create new things through a more innovative perspective so that the construction process of the Sinpo City seaside aquaculture business becomes another revolutionary development stage in industrial facility design,” he added.
The newspaper reported that the meeting discussed ways to promote the economic development of cities and counties near the sea by well-establishing the Sinpo City aquaculture business.
The report also mentioned that Sinpo City was designated as a pilot unit after Kim issued special instructions for the Workers’ Party Central Committee to spearhead a demonstration creation project. This initiative aims to enable cities and counties near the sea to utilize their resources effectively.
Meanwhile, North Korea has recently focused on local economic development by promoting the 20×10 Regional Development Plan, a key project of Kim. This plan includes the construction of modern industrial factories in 20 counties each year and improving the standard of living within ten years.
In line with these efforts, Kim has continuously visited local economic sites. This includes visits on the 11th and 12th to Samjiyon City near Mount Paektu, which is being developed into a model modern mountainous city of culture.
