As North Korea approaches the 71st anniversary of the Korean Armistice Agreement, which it refers to as the Day of Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War (July 27), it has ramped up its hostility toward the United States, stating, “The invaders’ aggression and war frenzy have never ceased for even a moment.”
On July 22, North Korea’s official newspaper, Rodong Sinmun, published an editorial titled “A War Without Gunfire—70 Years of Great Victories,” questioning whether the “horrific war truly ended after three years of wartime.”
The article further claimed that since the start of the combined military exercises between South Korea and the U.S.: the Focus Lens, they kept conducting military drills aimed at North Korea, asserting, “The bloody war drills have persisted for over 70 years without pause.”
It also criticized the increasingly blatant and brutal nature of these joint exercises, stating, “Now, they have crossed the red line into a new nuclear world war without hesitation.”
The article boasted that they had amassed a powerful nuclear deterrent capable of permanently ending the prolonged war. It claimed that North Korea had become a pivotal force in shaping and transforming the global political landscape.
North Korea asserts that the date of the Korean Armistice Agreement marks the victory over the United States, which it accuses of initiating the Korean War. Since 1996, this day has been designated as a national holiday, using it as an opportunity to bolster internal solidarity.
North Korea commemorates the Day of Victory in the Great Fatherland Liberation War every year. Last year, it held a parade to mark the 70th anniversary, inviting delegations from China and Russia, including then-Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Li Hongzhong, First Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress.
This year, not marking a significant anniversary such as a 5 or 10-year cycle, North Korea is expected to commemorate the day at a more conventional level. In previous years, Kim has marked Victory Day by attending events, delivering speeches, or visiting the Victorious Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs’ Cemetery, dedicated to the soldiers who fell during the Korean War.
