A Chinese tourist is under investigation for filming South Korea’s National Intelligence Service (NIS) building by drone.
According to MBN‘s report on Sunday, a Chinese tourist was caught in the action for launching the drone from a public parking lot at Heonilleung in Seoul’s Seocho district around 3 PM.
As this area is adjacent to the NIS, drone operations require prior authorization.
Authorities are investigating whether the individual, reportedly an international shipping company employee, had ulterior motives for filming Heonilleung and the NIS. Suspicion has grown because Heonilleung, designated as Historic Site No. 194, is generally a low-traffic area and not a typical destination for foreign visitors.
The tourist claims he unintentionally captured the NIS building while filming Heonilleung. However, police found evidence suggesting he went directly to the location after arriving at Incheon International Airport.
When authorities intervened, he deleted the footage, but officials retrieved the drone’s SIM card and conducted a forensic analysis. They also plan to cross-check his immigration records with the forensic findings to verify his statements.
