Tesla CEO Elon Musk has publicly endorsed Republican candidate Donald Trump for the upcoming U.S. presidential election. Musk announced that he would randomly select one person each day who signs a petition supporting free speech and the right to bear arms, offering them approximately $1 million as a reward.
According to Reuters and Fox News, Musk made this promise during a campaign rally in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, on Saturday: “We’re going to be awarding a million dollars, randomly, to people who have signed the petition everyday from now until the election.”
The petition pledges support for the First Amendment (freedom of speech) and the Second Amendment (right to bear arms). Musk promised to pay $1 million to a randomly chosen individual every day until the election.
The petition drive is being run through Musk’s super PAC, America PAC, which he created to support Trump’s candidacy.
Until now, Musk has incentivized participation in the petition by offering $47 to each person who signed the petition in seven key battleground states, including Pennsylvania. This week, he increased that incentive to $100 in Pennsylvania and further sweetened the deal by adding larger cash rewards, including $1 million handed out at the Harrisburg rally.
Musk’s efforts appear focused on collecting data from voters in crucial swing states, which could be used in the tightly contested election.
Though Musk was previously known for supporting the Democratic Party, he has now publicly declared his support for Trump in this election and donated approximately $75 million to “America PAC” in the third quarter alone.
In response, Trump stated that if he wins the election, he would appoint Musk as the chairman of the “Government Efficiency Commission.”
