The trial for former President Donald Trump, who has been criminally charged for paying hush money to a porn star to silence her sexual allegations before the 2016 U.S. presidential election and forging business records, is set to begin this week, reported Voice of America (VOA) on the 14th (local time).

Trump will stand trial from the 15th. This will be the first time a former U.S. president faces a criminal trial. If found guilty, there is a possibility he may be incarcerated, which is not negligible on his November election.

This week, Judge Juan Merchan of the New York Manhattan District Court, prosecutors, and Trump’s defense attorney will select jurors and examine evidence related to the charges. As a Republican presidential candidate, Trump will have to appear in court as a defendant four days a week for about a month and a half. With the election about 200 days away, his court appearances are expected to impact his campaign significantly.

Previously, Trump faced allegations of paying $130,000 to porn star Stormy Daniels to prevent her from exposing their alleged sexual relationship before the 2016 election. He is facing up to 34 counts of charges, each carrying a maximum of four years in prison.

Trump is currently facing four criminal charges. The trial dates for the other three cases have not been set. VOA reported that “Trump has been trying to push the commencement of the trial back to after the election” and that “if Trump were to regain power, he would not face trial during his presidential term.”
