Iran vs Israel: Fallout of a Massive Missile and Drone Attack

Daniel Kim Views

Traces of ballistic missiles were spotted in the desert near the Dead Sea in southern Israel following a large-scale missile and drone attack from Iran, according to Reuters United News on the 21st (local time).

On the 22nd (local time), Iran, which had suggested a possible review of nuclear principles while exchanging limited attacks with Israel, drew the line on the possibility of developing nuclear weapons.

According to United News, Nasir Khanani, the spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, held a press conference that morning and stated that Iran’s nuclear principles are evident and nuclear weapons have no place in their nuclear principles since they will continue peaceful nuclear development within the framework of international organizations and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).

The official position was issued four days after the warning that an examination of nuclear principles seems feasible if Iran encounters a retaliatory attack from Israel. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, announced a fatwa (a religious leader’s decree or interpretation of Islamic law) banning weapons of mass destruction (WMD) concerning nuclear principles.

In Iran’s theocratic regime, a fatwa issued by the supreme leader powerfully operates as a national rule until the leader invalidates it.

On the 20th (local time), Israel launched an attack targeting military bases in Isfahan, Iran. Spokesman Khanani, discoursing the recent escalation of tensions with Israel, said, “Iran has only taken legitimate measures,” and added, “The countries that have urged us to restrain are supporting the Zionist regime (Israel), and this approach is neither righteous nor fair.”

Retaliatory attacks between Iran and Israel are ongoing. Israel bombed the Iranian consulate in Syria on the 1st of this month. In response, Iran launched a large-scale retribution on the 13th and 14th, deploying drones and missiles targeting Israeli air force bases.
