Donald Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, and Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate, clashed over choosing their first TV debate venue.
Trump announced on his social media platform, Truth Social, that “I have agreed with FoxNews to debate Kamala Harris on Wednesday, September 4.” However, this announcement seems to have been made unilaterally, without coordinating or reaching an agreement with Harris or the broadcasting network hosting the debate.
After initially withholding specific details about the schedule for the second TV debate, Trump suddenly revealed the date. He stated that the moderators would be Brett Baier and Martha MacCallum from Fox News, and the rules would be similar to those of the debate with Biden. He also mentioned that if Kamala Harris cannot participate in the debate on that day for any reason, he has agreed with Fox to hold a large town hall meeting on the evening of September 4.
In contrast, Harris’s campaign advocates for a debate on ABC News on September 10, in alignment with the second debate schedule that President Joe Biden and Trump agreed upon. It highlighted, “Donald Trump is running scared and trying to back out of the debate he already agreed to and running straight to Fox News to bail him out.”
Trump has declined to participate in the ABC debate, citing a potential conflict of interest arising from a defamation lawsuit he filed against ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos. George had referenced rape allegations against Trump made by fashion columnist E. Jean Carroll.
