Meta announced on Saturday that it would lift some restrictions on former U.S. President Donald Trump’s Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Meta stated that Trump, currently running against President Joe Biden, wouldn’t need additional monitoring. In a post, Meta said: “In assessing our responsibility to allow political expression, we believe that the American people should be able to hear from the nominees for president on the same basis.” Online users have long criticized Meta and other platforms for failing to moderate political content, including political candidates.
In response, Meta indefinitely suspended Trump’s account after he supported the January 6th Capitol attack. Meta restored his account early last year by further monitoring his future posts.
Trump was banned from Twitter in 2021. His account was restored after Elon Musk acquired the company, but Trump has only made one post since.
