Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is facing an election between the 15th and 17th, announced that he has technically prepared for a nuclear war. He also stated that North Korea has its nuclear umbrella and has not requested anything from Russia.
According to Reuters and Russian TASS News Agency on the 13th (local time), Putin answered this question in an interview with the national TV broadcast Russia-1 and others: Is Russia ready for a nuclear war?
President Putin stated, “We will use nuclear weapons when the existence of the state is related or our sovereignty and independence are violated.” Reuters emphasized that the condition for using nuclear weapons is a threat to national existence.
Furthermore, President Putin added, “From a military-technical point of view, we are of course ready. Nuclear weapons are always in a state of combat readiness.” He also said, “Weapons exist to be used. We have our unique principles,” emphasizing that the use of nuclear weapons is a legal response under national regulations.
Putin warned that if the United States deployed troops to Ukraine, it would also be defined as an intruder. Putin stated, “We know what it means for US troops to appear on Russian territory (occupied Ukraine). This is an intrusion. We will treat them as such,” adding, “This will be applied even if they appear on Ukrainian territory, and the United States understands this.”
However, it does not seem that Russia also wants to lead to a nuclear war. Reuters analyzed, “Russia has completely prepared for a nuclear war, but it is not unconditionally entering a nuclear war.”
Western countries supporting Ukraine have been providing material support until recently. The Biden administration announced on the 12th that it would provide Ukraine with $300 million in weapons and equipment. When Congress opposed the aid bill, the Biden administration decided to help Ukraine with a portion of the already secured defense budget. On the same day, Denmark also announced a military aid package worth $340 million, and the support line from Western countries continued.
Meanwhile, President Putin also mentioned North Korea, which has a close relationship with Russia. He said, “The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North Korea) has its nuclear umbrella,” and “They have not requested anything from us.”
Regarding the US elections, he stated, “We do not interfere in any election in any way,” and “As we have said several times, we will cooperate with any leader that Americans and American voters trust.”
