South Korean Military Fire Warning Shots as North Korean Troops Cross Border Line

Daniel Kim Views

It has been reported that North Korean military forces crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and then retreated.

According to Yonhap News, the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) announced on the 11th that North Korean military forces crossed the MDL on the 9th but retreated following warning shots from our military.

Through a notice to the Ministry of National Defense press corps, the JCS stated, “On the 9th at 12:30 pm, some North Korean soldiers working within the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) made a simple trespass over the MDL and retreated to north after the South Korean military’s warning broadcasts and warning shots. There were no unusual movements other than the North Korean military moving north immediately after our warning shots.”

They also explained, “South Korean military is taking necessary measures based on operational procedures while closely monitoring the movements of the North Korean military.”

A Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) official reported that more than 10 North Korean soldiers inadvertently crossed the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), coming within 50 meters (approximately 55 yards) of it for a brief period. They immediately retreated north of the MDL when warning shots were fired. The official suggested that the North Korean soldiers, who were equipped with tools such as picks, likely lost their way and crossed the MDL accidentally.

The day the North Korean military crossed the MDL, the 9th, was the day our military conducted loudspeaker broadcasts against North Korea in response to their scattering of leaflets via balloons. There is an analysis that the JCS’s delay in revealing this information for two days may have been to avoid further escalating tensions.
